Brief Description: Regarded as the most important book on education ever written, The Idea of a University is a living classic that defines for grouping, late-20th Century souls what it truly means to be educated. Biographical Note: One of the best-known Catholic thinkers, John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was an Anglican priest for two decades, and was one of the founders and principals in the Oxford Movement, which sought to reinvigorate the Church of England. In 1845, he left the Anglican Church to convert to Roman Catholicism. He was ordained a priest soon after, and was elevated to Cardinal in 1879. Major General Josiah Bunting III is superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute and author of "An Education for Our Time."Marc Notes: Previously published: London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1852; Gateway editions.. Publisher Marketing:"The aim of the University is a true enlargement of mind... the power of viewing many things at once." Though a century and a half has passed since John Henry Newman delivered the lectures which provide the basis for "The Idea of a University," the prescription he served up is more relevant today than during the Victorian era. Newman wrote and delivered these addresses upon becoming the first rector of the newly founded Catholic University of Ireland in Dublin. His vision shaped that school, and helped inform the modern understanding of what a university education should encompass.
